Forum: GratefulDead Subject: In what order to buy?

Here is the discography http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grateful_Dead_Discography and just counting the studio, retrospective live, Dick's Picks series, Road Trips series, Dave's Picks series. What order would someone buy them by purchasing them on CDs, but purchasing them individually and not all at once? And would someone buy them from Amazon? And where could View from the Vault I, II, III, and IV soundtracks be purchased from at not high prices? And if someone wouldn't purchase everything from Amazon than where should be purchased from?

Listening to the Dead is all about finding the right era. They were a completely different band from decade to decade, and frequently from year to year.

So I'll recommend some key releases from my favorite years.

1968 - Two From The Vault
1969 - Live/Dead or Dick's Picks 16
1970 - Dick's Picks 4 or Dick's Picks 8 (I'd go with the latter)
1971 - Dick's Picks 2 and Road Trips 3.2
1972 - Any of the Europe '72 concerts or Dick's Picks 36
1973 - Dick's Picks 19 or Winterland Box Set
1974 - Dick's Picks 12 or Road Trips 2.3
1975 - One From The Vault
1976 - no phenomenal releases; try 7/17 or 7/18 here on the archive
1977 - Dick's Picks 15 or Dick's Picks 29 (I'd go with the former)

I don't go past 1977, so someone else will have to help you there. My personal favorite years are 1968, 1970, and 1973.

To purchase, try amazon first; if it's not there, try www.dead.net

so true. One solution might be to listen to a couple streaming shows from every year and see which dead you like.

These days I'm a 73 guy, but it wasn't always that way.

I agree. Streaming from the archive is a good way to sample different eras before laying down cash.

Shit, I'll bite. This is how I did it.....

1. Using an Excel spreadsheet, write the complete title for every CD in alphabetical order by row in Column A.
2. In the adjacent Column B, write the total number of letters in the title of the CD from Column A.
3. In Column C, write a formula to calculate the cube root of the number in Column B to the 13th decimal place (or you may use any Fibonacci number of your choice).
4. Custom sort the value returned in Column C in ascending order.
5. Buy in that order. Alternate purchase sources between Amazon and EBay and only make purchases on Tuesdays that fall on even dates in odd numbered months. You may make unlimited purchases on February 29th.

If you are serious, man oh man ...
See if you can find that Golden Road box set of there albums through 73 .
For the rest , season to taste . I would pick up various live sets form the different eras . I would go slow . And there are , of course, a billion hours of stuff to hear right here ! You could come back with less of a shotgun question, maybe like"what do I need to get from 71" etc.
Can't tell you where to get them .

Well... some releases in each series are not that great, but for the completist.

Without knowing what you like in your listening, it's hard to guide you...

I know one thing, unless you are a millionaire, buying them all in sequential order, even within a series, is not recommended.

Or, do what Mandojammer said.

Why buy anything at this point? You have been posting here for a year and kinda asking the same question- which is fine- but if you follow the threads so many great recommendations are given all the time. Give these a listen and see what you like, opposed to spending a few thousand to buy all their music blind.

Begin playing track number 33 (Not Fade Away).
Listen to end.
Read the reviews.
Finish listening and realize you can't buy that.
Now realize that there are hundreds of other amazing shows to be found here that one cannot buy.
